The final, illustrated version of the Global Vaccine Action Plan—a roadmap for preventing millions of deaths by 2020—is available online. The 152-page document details the ambitious goals and actions agreed to by the World Health Assembly, which outline how the immunization community can achieve more equitable access to existing vaccines for people around the world. The plan includes a foreword by the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration Leadership Council, photographs, charts, and annexes.
The Global Vaccine Action Plan was endorsed by the 194 member states of the 65th World Health Assembly in May 2012 following a lengthy consultation process involving more than 1,100 people working in immunization. In addition to reiterating existing goals, the final version of the plan sets new goals for the rest of the decade, proposes six strategic objectives and the actions that will support their achievement, and provides an initial estimate of resource requirements and return on investment. Since receiving the World Health Assembly’s endorsement, the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration has prepared additional annexes with key metrics and indicators for the decade, as well as a full list of contributing individuals, organizations, and countries.
PATH is a member organization of the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration Secretariat. We, along with immunization partners—governments and elected officials, health professionals, academia, manufacturers, global agencies, development partners, civil society, media and the private sector—are committed to working toward achieving the Global Vaccine Action Plan’s goals.
About the Global Vaccine Action Plan
The plan started as a vision for a “decade of vaccines” that would help lead to world in which all individuals and communities enjoy lives free from vaccine-preventable diseases. The Decade of Vaccines Collaboration was formed to pool the collective expertise of vaccine, health, and development experts from around the world to develop a plan that makes this vision a reality.
The success of the plan promises to be an enduring legacy for today’s children and the generations who follow them. It is a resource to be used, discussed, and adapted to fit the needs of each region and country. In that spirit, we encourage you to share the final document. View the plan on our website and share it with your friends and colleagues via email, websites, and social media.
