In the long history of bacterial meningitis, time moves slowly—until the 21st century. The disease was first reported more than 200 years ago, and it’s been over 40 years since introduction of the first vaccines, which don’t prevent epidemics like those that sweep through Africa. In the last decade, though, progress toward introducing a vaccine designed for Africa has been rapid—the result of applying will and resources toward a solution.
