Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of nonprofits, has awarded PATH its highest possible rating for sound fiscal management—a designation we've received for four years running. Fewer than 5 percent of the rated charities have received four stars in consecutive years.

Our combined organizational efficiency rating is close to perfect, indicating how efficiently and responsibly PATH functions day to day. Our combined organizational capacity rating is a perfect 30, demonstrating that PATH is well able to sustain its efforts over time.

This achievement underscores PATH’s efforts to uphold the highest standards for financial stewardship and management. We start with a detailed budget developed 12 months in advance. Our Finance Committee monitors and measures actual expenses and income against the budget. Then, once a quarter, we run reports on every single project to monitor exactly how funds are being used.

Every year, our board of directors sets an overhead ceiling in line with industry standards and requires our administration to manage to one percentage point below that ceiling. As a result, more than 85 percent of our expenses are directed to our global health programs.

These measures and others have led the US government to consider PATH a leader in financial management. For more than 25 years, PATH’s audits have received an "unqualified opinion" from independent public accountants. Such an opinion means that our financial statements are correct and that the accounting controls in place ensure all funds are accounted for properly.

Charity Navigator has long given PATH high marks for financial stewardship. In 2007, they named us "one of the ten best charities everyone's heard of—charities that "became household names in part because of their exceptional financial management, no easy feat considering the scope of their operations. Charitable givers should feel confident that these national institutions put their donations to good use."

Charity Navigator confirms it: you can have confidence in PATH’s ability to maximize the return on your charitable contribution.
