The stock of essential medicines is nearly depleted

After Hajara Mohammed successfully delivered twins in Nigeria, the government-supported health facility where she gave birth was nearly depleted of its medicines to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage. All that remains is a small supply of misoprostol—which can deteriorate when exposed to heat and humidity—stored in a bedside table in the delivery room. Photo: PATH/Evelyn Hockstein.
