A primer on Nairobi night life, and HIV/AIDS

AIDS 2012, the International AIDS Conference, is under way in Washington, DC, this week. Among the estimated 25,000 attendees are three young actors from Africa who bring life to the hit television show, Shuga: Love, Sex, Money, which we wrote about last spring as the Kenyan MTV drama began its second steamy season.

Shuga is part of The Partnership for an HIV-free Generation, Kenya, which is housed at our Kenya country program. The innovative public-private partnership has an ambitious goal: to cut HIV incidence among Kenyan youth by half. The strategy involves using modern communications, including entertainment that carries a strong message, to reach and teach young people about HIV/AIDS.

If you’re at the conference this week, meet Shuga’s actors during a screening of two episodes of the series from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday in the Phillips Room at the Hotel Palomar, 2121 P Street NW. Or drop by our booth, number 128 in the Exhibition Hall D, to catch an episode.

If you’re not in DC this week, you can still see Shuga. Just check out the video in the blog post.
