Goals and strategy

PATH envisions a world where health is within reach for everyone, no matter where they live. Our mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors in communities around the world. Each program and project at PATH has a specific purpose and set of goals that align with our overall vision and mission.

In addition, from 2010 to 2015, PATH is following an organization-level strategic framework that focuses on bringing innovation to bear on some of the world’s largest and most stubborn health challenges. In particular, we will:

  • Accelerate interventions by moving new tools, technologies, and interventions efficiently through the entire innovation cycle. It’s not enough to innovate; to move from new idea to broad and effective use requires engagement with policy processes, regulatory processes, and clinical trial infrastructures.
  • Expand our reach by extending the capacity and coverage of our existing field programs to reach people of greatest need. Where appropriate, we’ll establish new field operations in strategic, high-priority countries.
  • Achieve scale by reaching more people with key health interventions, resulting in better health outcomes as well as stronger health systems

Capacity

PATH has the capacity to achieve our mission, thanks to our decades of experience in global health, our reputation and relationships with governments around the world, diversified funding sources, multidisciplinary teams with an array of expertise, and a program structure that supports global innovation and local implementation.

Some thirty years after inception, PATH’s modest origins and focus on contraceptive technologies have given way to a headquarters with a state-of-the-art laboratory and product development shop in Seattle’s emerging center for global health, the South Lake Union neighborhood.

In 2010, PATH's total revenue was more than US$283 million, provided by foundations, the United States government, other governments, multilateral agencies, corporations, and individuals.

We have a strong foundation in health technologies tailored to low-resource settings, and our scope has expanded to include helping governments strengthen public health systems and helping individuals protect themselves and their families against disease.

PATH now employs more than 1,100 people in 23 countries. Our staff provide expertise in public health; epidemiology; technology design, development, transfer, and introduction; immunodiagnostics and vaccine development; vaccine distribution systems; business development; education and training; communication; advocacy; and procurement.

We are working in more than 70 countries. Our global and country program structures allow us to move solutions from innovation to impact: supporting new ideas through inception, development, and testing; paving the way for introduction in low-resource countries; and working with governments and communities to integrate and expand the most successful ideas.

Our global programs, generally administered from our US offices, respond to the world’s most pressing health problems and allow us to develop solutions that can be applied broadly and tailored for local contexts, in collaboration with our country programs and a range of external partners.

Our country programs allow us to focus on the health priorities of a country or region and support the development of local solutions in close collaboration with our colleagues in the field—national and local governments, nongovernmental organizations, and community groups.

Progress

PATH evaluates our success on a project-by-project basis. Recently we developed cross-program indicators to get a more complete picture of the performance of our organization as a whole over time. We’ll use the data we collect on the indicators to better understand and increase the impact of our projects and our success accelerating interventions, expanding our reach, and achieving impact as described above under “goals and strategy.”
