Moving new ideas from the drawing board to the global stage
Individual donors are one of our most important sources of innovation funding, the flexible support that allows us to pursue groundbreaking ideas and respond to emerging needs. This type of support has moved many of our most successful projects forward at critical points in their development.
The icon to the right is used throughout our website to identify projects that have received innovation funding—to launch a new idea, to leverage major support from a major foundation, to hire critical new staff or expand effective work into a region with immediate or emerging needs.
The following projects are currently highlighted:
- Access to safe water in Cambodia, India, and Vietnam.
- Expanded uses for the Uniject™ injection system, including delivery of oxytocin and contraceptives.
- New approaches for more efficient production of influenza vaccines.
- Development of needle-free injection systems, including “jet injectors” that use a high-pressure stream to penetrate the skin.
- Addition of Ultra Rice®, fortified with vitamins and minerals, to school meal programs in India.
- Development and introduction of new vaccines against human papillomavirus, or HPV, the primary cause of cervical cancer.
- Trials of vaccine candidates to stop malaria.
- Behavior change under the Entre Amigos project, which helps boys become responsible young men.
- Expanded manufacture and introduction of Japanese encephalitis vaccine.

Our thanks go out to the many people whose gifts allow us to continue acting quickly and decisively, wherever we need to go, whatever we need to do.
